Challenges of winter
Winter in Finland is a time of rest and resilience. As nature slows down, the northern wilderness prepares for the coldest season of the year. From deep snow to the mystical polar night, winter brings both challenges and beauty. But with the right preparation, we can overcome its hardships and embrace the season’s unique rhythm.
The Nordic winter - a season of rest
During winter, Finland’s landscapes transform into a frozen wonderland. Average temperatures drop below freezing, and thick snow blankets the ground, offering essential protection for plants and animals against the biting frost. Many creatures, including insects and small mammals, hibernate, while migratory birds escape to warmer regions.
Above the Arctic Circle, winter brings the ‘polar night,’ a period when the sun does not rise for up to 51 days. During this time, the sky is often illuminated by the breathtaking northern lights. The stillness is broken only by the whisper of frost-covered trees and the occasional call of a raven.
Nature’s strategies for survival
Surviving winter requires careful preparation. Different species have developed unique ways to endure the extreme cold:
- Squirrels store acorns and berries and even dry mushrooms by hanging them on branches.
- Bears hibernate under the snow, relying on the fat reserves they built up in autumn.
- Plants shed their leaves, bury seeds, and rely on deep roots to survive underground until spring.
Winter is also a time for those who depend on nature’s cycles to pause, reflect, and plan for the future. While the season is long, light gradually returns, and the landscape slowly awakens, bringing new life with the arrival of spring.
